In the past two weeks, I’ve finished two books that have been sitting on my bookshelf that I lugged back during winter break from Waterstone’s in London. Every time I step into a bookstore, nine times out of ten I cannot leave without purchasing at least five novels + one cookbook (which usually ends up being Ottolenghi because that man is a genius). However, I will say I did pop by Strand last week and though I did leave my fingerprints all over the New + Newsworthy section, I did not buy a stack of books because I knew I had to finish these two first – which I did!!
Talk Like Ted by Carmine Gallo: A little slow to start, but I really like how this book broke down the specific nine points he thought led the way to effective public speaking and referenced specific Ted Talks in the book. I am an AWFUL pubic speaker and I know that I need to work on this if I want to be a top shot director somewhere one day. There were great pointers + I’ve been going through Ted Talks + thinking about signing up for a public speaking class. Which I will do after I get over my fear of taking a public speaking class…yikes.
The Art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli:There were great pointers all throughout this book and I liked how each chapter was a different tip. Easy read, required me to do some thinking at times and reminded me of my LSAT prep from last year (dear god, never again). He also italicizes important terms so I can definitely go back to this in the future and look up major points. At times, it did feel a bit textbook-esque but his dry British humor made up for it.
Obviously because I finished this book today, I had to run to my local bookstore and pick up another book. I went through the entire store, picked up four but made myself put them all back but one because of money purposes. I’ve had Platform by Michel Houellebecq on my Shelfari for a while now, so I’m kind of excited to read a novel and not a self-help book. But first, Vanderpump Rules marathon of course!
